Revamped for a second (and final) time in 1998, the R129-series version of Mercedes-Benz’s iconic SL sportscar underwent numerous cosmetic and mechanical changes.

Riding on 17-inch alloy wheels as standard, they also sported reprofiled bumpers and smoother taillights.

Inside, a new steering wheel design was complemented chrome-ringed instrument dials and more cossetting seats.

Powered by Mercedes-Benz’s latest SOHC, three-valves-per cylinder V6 and V8 engines (although, an older V12 remained optional) allied to five-speed automatic transmission, they were typically cleaner, brawnier and more fuel efficient than their predecessors.

With some 201bhp / 199lbft on tap from its 2.8 litre M112 powerplant, the V6-imbued SL280 was reputedly capable of 144mph and 32.5mpg.

Only in production from 1998 – 2001, a mere 1,704 were sold worldwide.
