Notable as Ferrari’s last mid-engined 2+2-seater, the Mondial was introduced at the March 1980 Geneva Salon.

Styled by Pierangelo Andreani and Leonardo Fioravanti at Pininfarina, its slatted side vents presaged those of the Testarossa and 348.

Equipped with all-round independent double wishbone suspension, front / rear anti-roll bars, four-wheel disc brakes and rack and pinion steering, the newcomer’s tubular spaceframe chassis was clothed in a mixture of steel and aluminium.

Significantly more expensive than its two-seater 308 GTB sibling, the Mondial shared the same 2926cc ‘Flat Plane Crankshaft’ alloy V8 engine and five-speed manual transmission.

Arriving in 1982, the Mondial Quattrovalvole featured a revised F105A powerplant with (as its name suggested) four valves per cylinder.

Credited with developing 240bhp / 188lbft, the newcomer was reputedly capable of 0-60mph in 6.4 seconds and 149mph.
