A derivative of the Rover 75 which BMW money and engineering expertise had helped hone, the MG ZT debuted in 2001.

Utilising the same, notably rigid, front-wheel drive monocoque platform as its stablemate, the newcomer differed not just in its Peter Stevens styling (he of McLaren F1 and Lotus X180 Esprit fame) but also in its suspension set-up.

Determined to make the ZT (and its ZT-T estate car sibling) far sportier to drive, Rob Oldaker and his team specified aluminium rather than rubber for the subframe mounts, stiffened the springs by seventy percent, uprated the shock absorbers and recalibrated the anti-roll bars.

Dechromed and riding on 18in alloy wheels shod with Z-rated tyres, the MG duo handled as well as their more menacing aesthetic suggested.

Progressively developed, the ZT and ZT-T could be had with a choice of petrol or diesel engines and manual or automatic transmissions.
