As production of the Type 964 neared its conclusion, Porsche introduced one of the most distinctive and exclusive variants of the air-cooled era.

Built during 1993 and 1994 by Porsche’s Exclusive Department from the final allocation of 964 Turbo chassis, the 911 Turbo 3.6 S Flachbau, or Flatnose, represented a culmination of Porsche’s bespoke manufacturing capabilities and the ultimate expression of the rear-wheel-drive 964 Turbo.


Reviving a design theme first popularized by the Sonderwunsch-program 930 Turbos of the 1980s, the Flachbau drew inspiration from the aerodynamic profile of Porsche’s dominant 935 race cars.

The traditional 911 silhouette was transformed by a dramatically reworked front end featuring exposed pop-up headlights, vented front fenders, and a lower, more purposeful appearance.


Based on the 911 Turbo 3.6, the Flachbau was built in three separate series for Japan (X83), Rest of World markets (X84), and the US (X85).
