European automakers created numerous homologated rally cars for the street in the early 1980s, but none were more radical in concept than the Renault R5 Turbo.

Already the best-selling car in France, the standard Renault R5 platform was heavily modified to accept a highly tuned, turbocharged, 1.4-liter engine that was relocated midships, making the R5 Turbo the most powerful French production car available at the time.

Restyling by Marcello Gandini of Bertone gave the R5 Turbo the aggressive looks to match its performance.
Only 3,167 examples of the Turbo II were built from 1983 to 1986.

The R5 Turbo would go on to exemplify the “hot hatchback” segment of that era, being named by the editors of Sports Car International magazine as one of the “Top 10 Sports Cars of the 1980s.”
