Background
The SLK (R170) is based on the super successful Mercedes C-Class. The SLK Concept car was presented at the 1994 Turin Motor Show.

The two-seater roadster concept car featured a groundbreaking folding metal electro-hydraulic roof, dubbed ‘vario-roof’.
Fearing copy-cat systems, the Germans claimed patent rights very quickly.

A production version went on sale in 1997.
