In the early 1960s, after the Ford Motor Company was rebuffed by Ferrari in its attempts to buy the Italian marque as a ticket to international endurance racing success, it was decided that if Ferrari couldn't be bought, then it must be beaten! 

Based on Eric Broadley's Lola GT, the new ‘GT40’ project commenced in 1963, based at Ford’s Advanced Vehicles plant at Slough, England.

To strengthen their team, and in addition to Broadley, Ford engaged former Aston Martin racing director John Wyer and other experienced 'racers' such as Phil Hill, Richie Ginther and Ken Miles. 

The GT40 first ran competitively in 1964 but failed at Le Mans that year and again in 1965.
