An engineering concern of great proportion, their business interests stretched widely from shipbuilding to railway locomotive and aero-engine manufacture.
Their earliest connection with motor cars came during the First World War when part of the company turned its efforts to building armoured bodywork for tanks based on the Lancia IZ chassis.
After the war, their staff had swelled to some 80,000, and a decision was made to enter the motor car industry as a practical way of catering for their spare capacity in the aero-engine division.
