Built in Munich between March 1989 and June 1991, the Z1 was BMW's rolling showcase for engineering ideas.

First were the innovative Xenoy thermoplastic body panels and doors that retract vertically into the sills rather than swing open.

Underneath, a purpose-built Z-Axle multi-link rear suspension paired with the contemporary 325i's front end and 2.5-liter M20 inline-six.



This Z1 completed production on 19 February 1991 and was specified in Traumschwarz Metallic (Dream Black Metallic) with a Dark Grey Nubuck and camouflage-pattern leather interior.

It reached AC Schnitzer's Freilassing works on 25 February 1991, believed to be one of just 10 Z1s to receive the tuner's complete performance conversion, boring the M20 six to 2.7 liters with its own 81 mm stroke crankshaft and 84 mm pistons for a dyno-verified 197 PS, a 16-percent gain over standard.
