Cretors & Company popcorn machine empire traces its roots to a small bakery and confection shop opened by Charles Cretors in 1880.

The Decatur, Illinois-based storefront was anything but modest however, reflecting Cretors' instinctive flair for spectacle and promotion; enticing passersby with vivid, colorful displays and candy-making equipment strategically positioned in view of the street.

Equally gifted as an inventor, Cretors soon began engineering his own confectionary machinery which began with his steam-powered automatic peanut roaster in 1885.

His ambitions evolved further with the creation of elaborate mobile concession wagons that could roast peanuts, brew coffee, and pop corn simultaneously.

Introduced in 1900, Cretors' so-called Special wagons were hand-built to order and tailored to each individual client, making each wagon unique.
