The Mercedes-Benz SL line debuted in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York, where Mercedes-Benz simultaneously unveiled the competition-focused 300 SL and the more accessible 190 SL.

While the 300 SL was rooted in motorsport, the 190 SL was conceived as a refined touring car, offering strong sporting character wrapped in a shared design language.

A factory-optional hardtop added year-round usability and a more intimate, enclosed driving environment.

Positioned to compete directly with sporting contemporaries such as the Porsche 356, the 190 SL was powered by a 1.9-liter inline four-cylinder engine with dual Solex carburetors.

Engineering highlights included modern unibody construction that delivered confident handling, independent front suspension, a low-pivot swing axle, and power-ventilated drum brakes derived from the flagship 300 SL.
