Conceived by Ford's Cologne motorsport department as a purpose-built circuit racer, the Capri's RS 2600 specification was created to homologate the model for Group 2 touring-car competition and give Ford a genuine European Touring Car Championship contender.
Based on the contemporary 2600 GT, the RS 2600 paired a Weslake-developed 2,637-cc Cologne V6 with alloy cylinder heads and Kugelfischer mechanical fuel injection, backed by a close-ratio four-speed, uprated suspension, ventilated front discs, lightweight body panels, and alloy wheels.
In full Group 2 trim, the package could be taken much further, including boring out the V6 to displace 3.0 liters along with dry-sump lubrication, extensive fiberglass bodywork, and a ZF five-speed gearbox, with outputs commonly cited north of 320 PS.
