FROM 16TH JAN'23 THIS APPLIES TO ALL AUCTIONS ON THE MARKET, AND FEES ARE CAPPED AT £5,000 (+VAT) South Africans Bob van Niekerk and Willie Meissner set up the Glass Sport Motor (GSM) company in Cape Town in 1958.
The name was a reference to their material of choice - fibreglass - which Willie encountered for the first time during a trip to England two years previously.
Willie summoned Bob to the UK to learn how to work with fibreglass and whilst there they met designer and fellow South African Verster de Wit, who helped them create their first production model - the GSM Dart.
The first body came out of its mould in the UK in 1957 and it was sold to fund their return to South Africa along with the tooling.
The design was relatively simple - an open two seater body on a tubular ladder chassis with transverse springs at the front and coils at the rear.
