With a proud history going back to 1898, the Stanley brothers, identical twins who even favored the same beard style, had a difficult time adjusting to the reality that gas cars were the future.

Gasoline powered cars had overcome the disadvantages that Stanley had exploited (noisy, smelly, difficult to start with hand cranks) to promote their steamers.

Even with faster starting flash boilers, a steamer had to warm up before being driven.

Interest faded despite Stanley adopting conventional style hoods and grilles instead of their famed coffin nose style.

By 1924, the company was sold in liquidation.
