The car is in fine restored condition, combining new components with period patina. However, the body panels were ultra-thin and easily damaged, and vibration caused cracking which required re-welding. It also crashed heavily in the Portuguese GP and was badly damaged.

It set new standards for its low-slung, sleekly aerodynamic body form and its ultra-lightweight multi-tubular chassis construction.

The Type 16 was arguably the most advanced front-engined Grand Prix car to emerge during the life of the 2½-litre Formula 1 era (1954-1960).

It was small, svelte and brilliantly conceived.

With its 4-cylinder Coventry-Climax FPF engines it raced in both 1.96, 2.2 and 2.5-litre Formula 1 guise and in 1.5-litre Formula 2.

It made the first Lotus single-seater – the minimalist Type 12 of 1956-58, look positively crude in comparison while its distinctive high-tailed/low hood body form drew heavily upon the shape perfected by forme...
