Having reasserted itself at the pinnacle of the supercar hierarchy with the first "Boxer" – the 365 GT4/BB – Ferrari reinforced its position with its successor, the 512 BB.

For the new Boxer, Ferrari abandoned its long-standing tradition of naming models according to unitary displacement and adopted the nomenclature used for the Dino range, where "512" denotes 5 litres / 12 cylinders.

Displacement was increased through both a larger bore and longer stroke, while the compression ratio was raised and a dry sump lubrication system was adopted.

The result of these modifications was increased torque which, combined with revised gearbox ratios, made the 512 more flexible.
As might be expected, changes to the highly regarded Pininfarina design were minimal.
