Launched in 1980, the Quattro was based on the Coupé GT body shell; although outwardly similar, it used a different floorpan to accommodate its all-wheel-drive system and independent rear suspension.

The engine was an evolution of the 2.1-litre inline five-cylinder with a single overhead camshaft, first seen in the 200 saloon.

Equipped with a KKK turbocharger, it produced 200 horsepower in road-going form, with significantly greater output available in competition specification.
