Visually, the car was practically identical to other W109 models, but - thanks to the 600 limousine's fuel-injected 6,332cc V8 - offered stupendous performance.

Air suspension, a limited-slip differential, and four-wheel disc brakes came as standard.

Capable of sprinting to 100km/h in 6.5 seconds and reaching 220km/h (136mph), the '6.3' could outrun almost anything else on the road, sports cars included.

Enthusiastic owners included Hollywood icon Steve McQueen, who famously ordered one after his Porsche 911 was blown away by a '6.3' on the German Autobahn .
