The concept famously dates as far back as 1934, but the Beetle's legendary status was truly solidified in the sixties, when the Beetle was at the peak of its popularity thanks to unlikely surging sales in the United States.
By the mid 1960s, Volkswagen were producing an astounding 6,800 Beetles every day in a plant that was larger than Wolfsburg's residential area.
