Presented at the September 1972 Paris Motor Show, the W116 generation was the first large Mercedes saloon to be badged S-Class, and quickly set a new high watermark for design, safety, and engineering integrity.

Awarded European Car of the Year in 1974, the W116 was launched with two versions of the M110 inline-six, and a 3499cc M116 V8 badged as the 350 SE.

A 4520cc V8 450 SE was also available from 1973, but this larger capacity motor was aimed at addressing stringent US emissions restrictions rather than increasing performance; the storming 450 SEL 6.9 of 1975 became the powerhouse of the range.
