With the W111 220 having firmly reestablished Mercedes-Benz as the preeminent manufacturer of luxury passenger cars, attention turned to replacing the range-topping but ageing W189 300d Adenaur limousine.

With the 600 Grosser still several years away in development, a stopgap was created in 1961 by developing the visually similar but mechanically superior W112 300 SE.

The new halo limousine boasted the powerful M189 straight-six, a more refined derivative of the M198 used in the 300SL, with a new air suspension system, automatic transmission, and luxurious standard trimmings.

The price was double, but the 300 SE still sold well, and in February 1962 the gloriously elegant coupé and convertible models were released....
