BMW was encouraged by the enterprising Max Hoffman, originally from Austria, and at the time an importer of many European marques to the United States, who knew the person capable of designing such a car, Count Albrecht von Goertz, a freelance industrial designer who had worked with the legendary Raymond Loewy on Studebakers in the latest fashion.

Goertz was asked to prepare two different designs, which made their respective debuts as prototypes at the 1955 Frankfurt Motor Show.

The more conservative of the two - the 503 - used the chassis of the 502 saloon, its suspension and its column-mounted gear shift, while the 507 was built on a much shorter wheelbase, which allowed the gearbox to be assembled directly next to the engine (the 503 Seri...
