Introduced in 1972 , the Group 4 Pantera was developed with assistance of Mike Parkes, the former Ferrari Formula 1 driver and development engineer.
The stock steel monocoque chassis was retained but virtually ever part of the running gear was up-rated to cope with the stresses of racing, while the bodywork was extensively lightened.
Although Ford had backed the development of the road car, they declined to supply engines for the Group 4 racer so De Tomaso sourced power units from the US-based independent engine builders.
