Vincenzo 'Enzo' Osella campaigned sports-racing cars for Abarth in the mid-1960s and grew his company to run as the Abarth-Osella team, which – in the early 1970s - became, in effect, the Abarth factory team.
When Carlo Abarth sold his business to Fiat in 1971, Osella took over the sporting operations and established his own marque at Volpiano, near Turin.
Despite many wins in races and hillclimbs with his own version of the Abarth 2000 sportscar - notably with Arturo Merzario in the 1972 European 2-litre Championship of Makes - the sports-racing car market was always going to be relatively limited.
Consequently, when Osella switched from using essentially Fiat-derived Abarth engines German BMW units he also diversified into Formula 2 single-seater competition.
His designer Antonio Tomaini produced the Osella FA2 single-seater in 1974 in parallel with the PA2 sports-prototype as offered here.
