In 1972, Abarth & C's extremely capable chief designer, Mario Colucci developed another single-seater racing car chassis from his Formula Italia concept.
This was the larger-engined Fiat-Abarth Formule Libre, which was to be powered by the Fiat 124 Rallye Spider 4-cylinder 1756cc engine, more highly-tuned than in rally configuration to develop as much as 170bhp at a lusty 6,200rpm.
As with the Formula Italia SE025 cars themselves, this new Formule Libre design employed the Lancia Fulvia five-speed transaxle gearbox.
It appears that one car was built as an experimental prototype, and it was equipped with both large nose wings on each side and a rear wing extending laterally to the inner tyre sidewalls on each side, and mounted upon medium-height struts behind the engine bay.
It employed more robust suspension components, uprights, bigger wheels and tyres etc than the basic schoolroom class Formula Italia model from which it had been derived, and it is offered here as a most interest...
