Châssis n° 12135 Moteur n° 12239 Grande marque italienne, Alfa Romeo survécut aux turbulences qui marquèrent ses débuts pour devenir un protagoniste majeur des Grands Prix entre les deux guerres et un constructeur de masse après 1945.
Alfa Romeo SpA avait été fondée en 1918 après le rachat en 1915 par l'industriel Nicola Romeo de la firme ALFA alors en grande difficulté.
ALFA disposait déjà d'un atout considérable en la personne de son ingénieur en chef Giuseppe Merosi, venu de chez Bianchi, et sous sa direction, la firme se lança dans un ambitieux programme sportif qui allait voir les voitures rouges portant l'emblème du trèfle à quatre feuilles devenir une force dominante sur les circuits européens.
En 1920, Merosi commença à étudier ce qui sera la série RL.
Conventionnelle quant au châssis et aux essieux, la RL innova par son moteur à six cylindres à soupapes en tête, premier du genre pour Alfa Romeo et Merosi.
