Archie Butterworth of Frimley Green, Surrey, was a wonderfully extrovert engineering personality involved in the resurgent years of British motor sport immediately post-WW2.
He conceived, constructed and drove not only the world's first four-wheel drive Formula 1 Grand Prix car – the Steyr V8-engined Butterworth Special – but he also created a small series of 1.5-2.5-litre air-cooled flat-4 cylinder engines which he aimed to market for Formula 2, sports car and hopefully Formula 1 use under his initials 'AJB'.
His four-wheel drive Special had been based upon a Jeep chassis and was powered by the air-cooled engine from a German Wehrmacht scout car.
Its good power-to-weight ratio and practical design attracted Archie Butterworth and it was from experience of this air-cooled Steyr V8 power unit (and its drawbacks) that the British engineer set about building his own series of flat-4 cylinder racing engines...
