La Società Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati fut fondée en décembre 1914 à Bologne par Alfieri Maserati avec ses frères Ettore et Ernesto, la nouvelle compagnie se spécialisant dans la préparation et l'amélioration des Isotta-Fraschini pour la compétition.

Au début des années 1920, une collaboration fructueuse avec Diatto amena Alfieri à concevoir sa première voiture de grand prix qui servit de brouillon pour la première Maserati, la Tipo 26 de 1926.

Maserati rencontra un immense succès en compétition en Europe dans la catégorie « voiturette » tout au long des années 1930, mais ses victoires les plus marquantes furent acquises outre-Atlantique, lorsque Wilbur Shaw remporta les 500 Miles d'Indianapolis en 1939 et 1940.

Quand la production reprit après-guerre, en 1947, Maserati retrouva son rôle de constructeur de voitures de Grand Prix, tout en commençant à construire quelques modèles de sport et de grand tourisme.
