Mieux conçue que bien des voitures deux fois plus grandes, la FIAT 500 lancée en 1936 et vite surnommée « Topolino » (Mickey Mouse ou souris en italien) introduisit un niveau de qualité jusque-là inconnu dans le domaine des très petites voitures.

Freins hydrauliques Lockheed, suspension avant indépendante et système électrique en 12 volts la distinguaient des autres tandis que son moteur, installé devant l'essieu avant permettait d'obtenir un espace maximal dans l'habitacle prévu pour deux occupants.

Le moteur quatre cylindres à soupapes latérales de 599 cm3 donnait la modeste puissance de 13 ch, mais du fait que la Topolino dépassait à peine la demi-tonne, elle pouvait atteindre l'honorable vitesse de 80 km/h dans les meilleures conditions.

Pour de nombreux clients, la consommation souvent inférieure à 5,5 litres aux 100 km fut un argument déterminant.

Introduite en 1946, la 500 B reçut un moteur culbuté de 16,5 ch qui fut repris sur la dernière évolution, la 500 C de 1949, premiè...
