Towards the end of its existence (as a UK-owned manufacturer) MG produced a succession of exciting high performance models such as the ZR 160, ZS 180 and V8-engined ZT.

All of these were improved versions of existing MG/Rover models but nevertheless the company did have something genuinely fresh up its sleeve – the SV – which, if not exactly entirely new, was certainly new to the MG range.

The SV story began with MG/Rover's acquisition of the Italian-based Qvale Automotive, manufacturer of the Qvale Mangusta.

One of America's most distinguished motoring dynasties, the Qvale family began by importing MG cars in 1947, later adding a host of other European marques to its portfolio including De Tomaso, whose Bigua concept car was the Mangusta's progenitor.
