At the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1965 Mercedes-Benz introduced the latest 'S' Class saloons featuring the 'New Generation' bodyshell, the 300SE among them.

The latter employed a Bosch fuel-injected version of Mercedes-Benz's new, overhead-camshaft, seven-bearing 'six' displacing 2,996cc and developing 170bhp (DIN) at 5,400rpm.

There was independent suspension all round, though not self-levelling at the rear like the more complex 300SEL, and a choice of four-speed manual or automatic transmissions.

Equipped with the latter, like this example, the luxuriously appointed 300SE saloon was good for 115mph with 60mph reachable in around 12 seconds.

The 300SE saloon was produced for little more than two years (August 1965 to December 1967) and is one of the rarer Mercedes-Benz models of the period, only 2,737 being made.

Purchased from a deceased's estate, this right-hand drive 300SE saloon has been in storage for some 20 years and will require re-commissioning before returning to the road.
