Business must have been good for Alvis in this period, they were certainly offering a well put together car in the Speed Twenty series.

Dispelling some of the critique applied to their earlier cars, the Twenty positioned the driver in a much lower slung frame than its predecessors, which handled well and had ample power with its 2½ litre six cylinder overhead valve engine.

Aspiration of triple SUs gave 90bhp and at least 90 mph for open variants.

The company was also quick to stay ahead of the competition with series revisions, by the SC as offered this meant an enlarged capacity 2,762cc motor and the fluidity of a highly advanced all synchromesh transmission.

‘When cornering it is not only free from rolling – the low build sees to that – but the layout is such that it clings to the intended path at quite unexpected speeds, and when centrifugal force does eventually produce a skid it is of the rear wheels only and easily controlled,’ observed Motor Sport’s tester of the model.
