The 280C and 280CE (fuel-injected) coupés went on general sale early in 1972 looking almost identical to the existing 250C but benefiting from having Mercedes-Benz’s new 2.8-litre twin-cam ‘six’ under the hood.

The last of Mercedes-Benz’s New Generation models, the 250C/CE coupé had been introduced late in 1968.

Based closely on the 250 saloon, whose floorpan and running gear it shared, the newcomer featured pillar-less, fixed-head coachwork with lowered roofline and shortened passenger compartment.

Although the 280C/CE sold in the USA produced less power than before in the interests of meeting emissions targets, the European version was more powerful than its 250C predecessor, being capable of exceeding 120mph when flat out.

The 280C’s typical owner though, would have bought the car more for its superb engineering, luxuriously appointed interior and comfortable ride rather than its outright performance.

The model was replaced by a new 280C in 1976.
