This magnificently evocative monocoque-chassised Indianapolis car was built new in 1965 by American specialist Fred Gerhardt and we are advised that it was sold to customer Sid Weinberger in August that year after running in the 1965 Indy ‘500’ track classic as the Offenhauser 4-cylinder engined ‘Weinberger Homes Special’.

It was handled in that now legendary race – won by the unforgettable Jim Clark in his Team Lotus Lotus-Ford 38 – by George Snyder.

He qualified the Gerhardt-Offenhauser 16th fastest – absolutely in midfield amongst the 33-starters – having posted a four-lap qualifying average of 154.825mph.

In the race he was classified 21st after being forced to retire by transmission trouble.

Driver Gordon Johncock then took over the car to win the subsequent Milwaukee ‘200’, and the Weinberger Homes team returned to Indianapolis for the 1966 500-Miles, with Johncock as driver and 4-cam Ford V8 power now in the engine bay of the Gerhard...
