The new S-Class saloons – standard and long wheel-base – were proudly launched in January 1991 after lengthy development which commenced in the early ‘80s.

A year later, the new generation of two-door S-Class coupes were introduced, closely based on the S-Class Saloons, but with a shorter 115.9-inch wheelbase.

Sumptuously equipped like the saloons, the most powerful 600SEC had no less than a 402bhp, 6-litre, V-12 power unit, enough to meet most situations, with 60mph in just 6.5seconds.

One of the worlds’ finest cars and developed virtually without regard to cost, these models reached the UK market at the height of recession in 1991, and at a list price of £93,000 in standard form, were only afforded by the very wealthy.

With a silky smooth ride, this was one of the largest, heaviest cars on the market.

Handling was surprisingly agile, with steering, stopping, and cornering poise that inspired confidence, doing justice to sports cars half their weight.
