Originally previewed through a series of remarkably production-ready concept cars at the Frankfurt and Paris Motor Shows, the Smart Roadster and Roadster Coupé immediately attracted attention for their distinctive styling and refreshingly uncluttered design.

There was a 'notchback' version with out the rear 'glasshouse', although the Coupé offered better provision for luggage.

Impressively, when production finally commenced in 2003, the finished cars remained strikingly faithful to the original concepts, retaining the dramatic proportions, compact footprint and unmistakably modern character that made them such crowd favourites.
