The brilliant freelance designer Laurie Bond created the Berkeley sports car as a direct response to the Suez crisis, focusing on efficiency, lightness and simplicity.

Launched in 1956, the car was remarkably advanced for its time, featuring an ultra‑light composite monocoque made from glass fibre, steel and aluminium, a transverse engine, front‑wheel drive and fully independent suspension with twin wishbones at the front and coil‑spring dampers all round.

Despite achieving notable competition success, traditional sports car buyers often struggled to embrace the low‑powered and high‑maintenance British two‑stroke motorcycle engines then available.

It was not until Berkeley introduced the three‑wheeled T60 — aimed at motorcyclists looking to step up into a car — that true commercial success followed.

The T60 proved a hit, with around 1,800 examples produced in just 18 months.
