In late 1972 the particularly well-equipped Double-Six Vanden Plas appeared.
It had a 4 inches longer wheelbase, and had a black vinyl roof which set it apart from the lower specification XJ models.
The XJ line was updated in autumn 1973.
The 4.2 Litre XJ6 and the 5.3 Litre XJ12 were continued with an addition of a 3.4 L version available from 1975.
Initially the Series II was offered with two wheelbases, but in 1974 the standard wheelbase version was withdrawn.
Visually, Series II cars had raised front bumpers to meet US crash safety regulations, which necessitated a smaller grille, complemented by a discreet additional inlet directly below the bumper.
