Thanks to the design of a more powerful single-cylinder internal combustion engine that was as reliable as its Daimler-Benz counterpart, De Dion-Bouton was able to claim the title of the world's largest automobile manufacturer in 1900.
Developed a few years earlier by Mr Bouton, this engine was tested in 1895 on a tricycle which proved so successful (particularly in motor sport) that it was widely used by other manufacturers.
The De Dion-Bouton tricycle was produced between 1897 and 1901/1902, undergoing several evolutions.
This particular model is remarkable in so many ways, first of all because it was one of the first models produced with its engine stamped with the date 4.C.98 (1898) and also because it retained specific characteristics.
