This first-generation Twingo, with no rear seat, was converted into an EV for research and promotional purposes.

It is covered in decals for electrical equipment brands and one marked ‘Veicolo Elettrico Sperimentale, Vicenza-Milano-Torino’.

It was part of the ‘Elégie’ programme, in which Renault took a leading role, itself part of the Eureka initiative, launched in 1985 by François Mitterrand and Helmut Kohl with the aim of strengthening the competitiveness of European industry.

This programme sought to develop electric vehicles and resulted in several prototypes, including this one, which was probably used in Italy for demonstration purposes, although its exact history is not known.

Attractively presented, this Twingo is complete with its powertrain, but is not in running order and cannot be registered for road use.
