Alongside the Formula Renault, in which single seaters with a Martini chassis and 2-litre engine competed in the mid-1990s, the Formula Campus was created in 1993.

It was the product of the fertile imagination of Claude Fior, an engineer and mechanic from Nogaro who had started out as a motorcycle racer and the designer of a celebrated triangular fork.

He was also interested in cars and had the idea for an economical ‘training formula’ for single-seaters: this would become the Formula Campus, set up in collaboration with Renault and Elf, which would give many young drivers the chance to compete, among them Franck Montagny, Sébastien Bourdais and Romain Dumas.

With a 1.4-litre 4-cylinder engine from the Clio, the Campus racing cars even had a second life in the 2010s, as part of a project in secondary schools.
