In 2011, to celebrate the launch of the Renault 4, Renault Classic entered three R4s in the Rallye Monte-Carlo Historique.

Sylvain Reisser, 'Monsieur Automobiles' of Le Figaro, was in the car driven by Jean Ragnotti.

This enabled him to write an excellent feature, which we quote here:
"Among this distinguished collection of rally cars, three Renault 4s vouched for the fact that Renault's first front-wheel drive car competed in the event in 1962 and 1963." A response to Citroën's 2 CV, the R4 took shape in the mind of Pierre Dreyfus, Renault's chairman, in the mid-1950s.

At the time, it was intended to replace the 4 CV, which had been launched just after the war and whose design was now outdated.

It was in this context that Renault introduced the concept of the 'blue jea...
