Ce modèle racé, présenté au Salon de Turin 1966, représente l'aboutissement des Maserati à moteur V8 avant et va permettre à la marque de reprendre une place affirmée sur le marché des voitures de Grand Tourisme.
Elle y est aidée par le magnifique moteur quatre arbres conçu par Giulio Alfieri, puissant, endurant et qui, dans sa version 4,9 litres, permet à la Ghibli d'atteindre 270 km/h.
