Un 4 cylindres de 2.3 l et un V6 de 2.8 l ont été choisi en cette période trouble de guerre du Kippour, de crise pétrolière et de guerre froide.
Mais en 1975, il fut décidé d'adopter un bon vieux V8, appelé 5.0 litre, et de proposer une carrosserie Fastback afin de faire renaitre le mythe de la Mustang, la Mach 1.
