Les premières DBS étaient équipées du moteur 6 cylindres provenant de la DB6, solution intermédiaire en attendant l'arrivée du tout nouveau V8.
La DBS V8 était la digne suite de la DB6 ; elle fut annoncée en 1970.
Le moteur V8 à injection Bosch apporta à la DBS des performances en forte hausse mais montra un manque de fiabilité ; avec la série 2, les V8 furent donc équipés de carburateurs Weber.
Le moteur resta inchangé jusqu'à l'apparition en octobre 1988 de la Virage V8 au moment du changement de propriétaire de la marque passant de David Brown Ltd à Company Developments Ltd.
