Peu après, en janvier 1951, Ferdinand Porsche disparaît et c'est son fils Ferry, brillant et dynamique, qui prend la suite.
La 356 reprend une plateforme dérivée de la Volkswagen, ainsi que son moteur modifié et plus puissant.
La carrosserie est dessinée par Erwin Komenda et réalisée dans les ateliers Reutter, à Stuttgart.
Légère et aérodynamique, la voiture fait merveille sur les parcours sinueux.
Les premières 356, baptisées rétrospectivement "Pré A" car elles arrivent avant la 356 A lancée en 1955, sont des modèles très rares.
