Elle entra aussitôt en production en même temps que la série limitée des 288 GTO.
Bien qu'héritière spirituelle de la berlinette Boxer, la Testarossa s'en démarquait comme étant la première Ferrari créée pour les Etats-Unis, depuis que les contraignantes lois sur la sécurité passive et l'antipollution avaient marqué profondément le marché Nord-Américain.
La BB ne fut jamais équipée d'usine pour ce marché et les quelques Boxer rencontrées aux Etats-Unis ont toutes été transformées localement pour répondre à la réglementation.
