Basé à Anvers, il a commencé modestement par produire des bicyclettes, à partir de 1897.
En 1900, il réalisait avec son frère une première voiturette et, trois ans plus tard, créait la société Minerva dont l'emblème était la tête casquée de la déesse de la guerre.
D'abord inspirées des Panhard de l'époque, les Minerva adoptaient ensuite leur propre personnalité.
Un modèle six-cylindres faisait son apparition en 1906, traduisant la volonté de Sylvain de Jong de se tourner vers les automobiles de prestige.
