Avec un premier modèle automobile lancé en 1890, Panhard n'a cessé ensuite de se développer, en se distinguant par des modèles sportifs particulièrement brillants, entre les mains de pilotes de la trempe de René de Knyff ou Henri Farman.

Panhard s'est orienté vers des voitures de luxe, en développant parallèlement des véhicules utilitaires et, en 1910, la marque adoptait pour certains de ses moteurs la technique "sans soupapes", à chemises coulissantes.

En 1910, Panhard se présentait même comme "la voiture des chefs d'Etats".
