Il est né de la victoire d'un spyder 550 à la Carrera Panamericana, en 1953.

A partir de ce moment-là, les versions Carrera auront droit au moteur conçu pour la course, doté de quatre arbres à cames en tête et d'un double allumage, dit "1500 GS".

Il délivre 100 ch dans sa première version, et va faire merveille en compétition.

A la puissance, il ajoute l'endurance, ce qui lui permet de remporter le redoutable Liège-Rome-Liège en 1954.

Ce moteur peut aussi équiper tout type de carrosserie de tourisme, coupé ou cabriolet, et accompagne donc la carrière de la 356, née en mars 1949 et qui pose les bases de toutes les futures Porsche de route.
